Interactive Projections

Interactive projection reacts in real time to the movements of people walking past or alongside the projected image. Interactive floor projections can be used as a surprising and experiential element at exhibition booths, in retail spaces, or at event entrances. The same equipment can also create a wall surface where graphic effects activate and move exactly where a person is standing. The hardware for an interactive projection includes a projector and optics selected for the job, delivering the right image size and brightness on the floor or wall. A camera that detects human movement is positioned correctly and connected to a computer running the game software, whose output the projector displays. We offer interactive projections as a service. Contact us and we will design an interactive projection to fit your needs — whether you are working to a budget or going for maximum impact.
ShopperScreen’s interactive projection system comes with ready-made effect templates where images and videos can be swapped to match the advertised brand or event theme. Using these templates saves time and money — no custom programming is needed. Extensive adjustment options mean the result can be dialed anywhere from subtle to high-energy to match the event theme. Impressive installations are achievable at a lower cost than you might expect. At our showroom at Mannerheimintie 36, you can try out the settings well before your event.

Case Study: Storytel at the Helsinki Book Fair

The Helsinki Book Fair is Finland’s largest and most significant literary event, attracting over 77,000 visitors this year. Storytel has participated in the event for several years, and this time they wanted to create something special for children. A dedicated Enchanted Forest themed area was built for younger visitors, featuring a listening tree, an animal mirror wall, and a ShopperScreen interactive floor projection.
Mirjami Rissanen, designer and spatial planner at Messukeskus, has designed Storytel’s exhibition spaces at the fair for several years. “This year the Book Fair created a dedicated children’s trail with the theme of Adventure. A number of exhibitors built their own adventure destinations around this theme, and the most impressive of them was Storytel’s Enchanted Forest.”
Mirjami designed a fun and visual booth, featuring a ShopperScreen floor projection tailored to Storytel’s brand and visual identity.
“I attended a ShopperScreen product presentation at the invitation of a designer colleague. When I received the brief from Storytel for the children’s area at the Book Fair, I got the idea to include their floor projection as part of the spatial design.”

“Children of all ages enjoyed the interactive play area and the booth was full throughout the fair. Babies and toddlers crawled among the forest leaves while older children jumped and ran around. The experience was modern and joyful, and all it needed was floor space and a mounting point for the projector,” says Noora Kunttu, Communications and Events Manager at Storytel.

"We will definitely do this again!"

“Working with ShopperScreen was smooth and straightforward. The setup and dismantling on build and breakdown days went without a hitch, and required no involvement from Storytel staff during the fair itself.”

ShopperScreen can deliver the full floor projection independently, but when custom visuals are needed — as in this case — only images and videos need to be supplied. Riikka Airaksinen, Creative Director at Välke Creative, who handled the graphic design for Storytel’s booth, confirms that the technical implementation with ShopperScreen was straightforward and the instructions for the work were clear.

“I went through the specifications with ShopperScreen by email, which made it easy to complete the work independently. Once the illustrations were finished, I sent them over for feedback. After one small contrast adjustment, the work was done.”

The floor projection at Messukeskus was set up by mounting a projector, computer, and motion detection camera onto the truss structure above the booth. Autumn leaves were projected onto the floor surface, which was a light grey — well suited to the lighting conditions. When the camera detected a child moving through the leaves, the leaves scattered to reveal animal characters hibernating underneath.

“The project was a success. This type of installation works well not only at trade shows but also in shopping centers, celebrations, and client events. Anything interactive that responds to people is compelling,” concludes Rissanen.
